Summer vacation has arrived. It is a good time to refresh our minds on the doctrine of rest. I am only recently beginning to get a little shred of understanding about how rest relates to God, but let me give you a taste of what I am learning.
1. Every time we sleep, and sleep soundly, it is a chance to reaffirm the absolute and complete sovereignty of God. You can sleep because God has no need for sleep! He is in complete and perfect control. Resting, absent of worry and toil is an affirmation of our trust in a trustworthy Creator. Lying awake worrying in the middle of the night is an act of faithlessness. (Ouch, I know - I am a regular midnight worrier.)
2. When we cease from work or study, it is an affirmation that all of our Ecclesiastical 'toil under the sun' is just that. It may be of some importance, but it just isn't nearly as important as we can make it out to be. God is so in control that even if I shut down my computer and 'text box', life will still go on. The God of the universe is still in control even if I don't stay up half the night scrubbing the kitchen floor and baseboards or designing the picture perfect birthday celebration for one of my children.
3. If you are a mother, it is likely your work never really stops for long, and that is good and right. However, when you spend hours in the sandbox with your son, instead of scrubbing away at the baseboards: that is a reminder for your soul that your righteousness is not in your latest cleaning frenzy or any number of other works you may be ever so pleased with...but in Christ alone.
4. If summer is your busiest season: Christ is still your rest! All the time, right now, and eternally. If your schedule is full, Christ is still your rest. If sleep is in short supply, you can rest in Christ even in your weariness.
5. A heart that is at rest in God is a contented heart. Cast your heart and hopes for happiness wholly on your Creator. Be at rest, even amidst hardship, in Him.
Enjoy the summer and let it be a reminder that we can rest because God never does.
Cheers!
